Yet in many jurisdictions we watch and listen as contradictions play themselves out and people either feel or are in fact excluded from active participation in their societies. We think for example of the Israel &#8211; Palestine conflict, the rise in protests and clashes in the USA grounded in racial intolerance, the increase in xenophobic utterances and actions in societies across Europe that have been impacted and changed by the continuing forced migration of persons from their countries of origin, the mass killings in various African nations on the grounds of differences in religion to name a few. So when we talk about diversity and inclusion it seems to be all an academic exercise rather than truly genuine efforts towards creating communities of inclusion among diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Within this context issue 84 of the Journal of Adult Education and Development, itself reflective of diversity given the spread of its writers (jurisdictional, religion, sexual orientation among other characteristics) and demonstrative of efforts toward inclusion, is not only timely but extremely relevant as demonstrated in its title \u201cInclusion and Diversity\u201d. Writers from various parts of the world discuss many aspects of inclusion and diversity within various contexts of life and work.<\/p>\n<p>The selection of articles from the journal for deeper reflection and discourse through this virtual seminar itself demonstrates diversity both in the type of articles and their regional representation.\u00a0 Annette Sprung of Austria examines the subject of inclusion within the context of a society that has been changed by migration.\u00a0 Her article interrogates these issues within the context of organizing for and delivering adult education. In so doing she is challenging us as adult educators to wear lenses that not only help us to look out but that enable us to self reflect. Rima Abboud comes at the topic of diversity and inclusion within the ambit of sexual orientation highlighting the challenges faced by Palestine and Arab LGBTQI+ communities.\u00a0 She shares the experiences of a network of women as they confronted the challenges they faced in navigating their context as Palestinian, non-conformist sexual orientation and women. The importance of inclusion in the process of community empowerment is highlighted by Daniel Mpolomoka. Daniel questions and challenges the approach of the Zambian theatre\u2019s \u201cTheatre for Development\u201d practices arguing that efforts to empower people with the knowledge, tools and skills required for improving their livelihoods and enabling persons in their own self development must include the voice of the people. My own paper promotes inclusiveness as a principle of adult education and as such discusses a number of strategies to help adult eductors to critically reflect on their own teaching practice and to build their capacity to create inclusive classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>As adult educators and practitioners we must continually contend with those factors that cause people across the globe to feel excluded and which inhibit individuals from achieving their fullest potential.\u00a0 As we think about education through the lenses of inclusion I am reminded of the recent UNESCO publication Rethinking Education: Towards a global common good? Through that document we are challenged as adult educators to educate in a manner that both demonstrates and fosters behaviours in our societies that are grounded in the principles of respect for life and human dignity, equal rights and social justice within contexts that are vulnerable due to growing inequalities and intolerance. Indeed our goal as adult educators should be, among other things, to enable and facilitate all learners in their quest \u201cto be\u201d and to engender a social ethos of living together in harmony, respecting our diversity. That is what inclusion is about. I therefore invite you as we debate in this virtual seminar to think deeply about the issues that push back at inclusion in our contexts and to consider how we can contend with those issues. Sin embargo, en muchas jurisdicciones observamos y escuchamos c\u00f3mo se producen contradicciones y las personas sienten o de hecho est\u00e1n excluidas de la participaci\u00f3n activa en sus sociedades. Pensemos, por ejemplo, en el conflicto entre Israel y Palestina, el aumento de las protestas y los enfrentamientos en los Estados Unidos basados en la intolerancia racial, el aumento de las expresiones y acciones xen\u00f3fobas en las sociedades de toda Europa que han sido afectadas y modificadas por la continua migraci\u00f3n forzada de personas de sus pa\u00edses de origen, los asesinatos en masa en varias naciones africanas por motivos de diferencias de religi\u00f3n, por nombrar algunas. Daniel Mpolomoka resalta la importancia de la inclusi\u00f3n en el proceso de empoderamiento de la comunidad Daniel cuestiona y desaf\u00eda el enfoque de las pr\u00e1cticas del teatro de Zambia &#8220;Teatro para el desarrollo&#8221; argumentando que los esfuerzos para empoderar a las personas con el conocimiento, las herramientas y las habilidades requeridas para mejorar sus medios de subsistencia y capacitar a las personas en su propio desarrollo deben incluir la voz de las personas. Mi trabajo promueve la inclusi\u00f3n como un principio de la educaci\u00f3n de personas adultas y, como tal, analiza una serie de estrategias para ayudar a los educadores\/as de personas adultas a reflexionar cr\u00edticamente sobre su propia pr\u00e1ctica docente y desarrollar su capacidad para crear aulas inclusivas.<\/p>\n<p>Como profesionales y educadores\/as de personas adultas debemos luchar continuamente contra los factores que hacen que las personas de todo el mundo se sientan excluidas y que impiden que las personas desarrollen todo su potencial.\u00a0 Al pensar en la educaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de la perspectiva de la inclusi\u00f3n, me viene a la mente la \u00faltima publicaci\u00f3n de la UNESCO Replantear la Educaci\u00f3n: \u00bfHacia un bien com\u00fan mundial? A trav\u00e9s de ese documento se nos desaf\u00eda, como educadores\/as de personas adultas, a educar de una manera que demuestre y fomente comportamientos en nuestras sociedades basados en los principios de respeto a la vida y la dignidad humana, igualdad de derechos y justicia social en contextos vulnerables debido al crecimiento de las desigualdades y la intolerancia. De hecho, nuestro objetivo como educadores\/as de personas adultas deber\u00eda ser, entre otras cosas, posibilitar y facilitar a todos los educandos su b\u00fasqueda del &#8220;ser&#8221; y engendrar un esp\u00edritu social de convivencia en armon\u00eda, respetando nuestra diversidad. De eso se trata la inclusi\u00f3n. Por lo tanto los invito, a medida que debatimos en este seminario virtual, a reflexionar profundamente sobre los problemas que retrasan la inclusi\u00f3n en nuestros contextos y a considerar c\u00f3mo podemos lidiar con esos problemas. Pourtant, dans de nombreuses juridictions, nous observons et \u00e9coutons les contradictions se manifester et les gens se sentent ou sont en fait exclus de la participation active dans leurs soci\u00e9t\u00e9s. Nous pensons, par exemple, au conflit isra\u00e9lo-palestinien, \u00e0 la mont\u00e9e des protestations et des affrontements aux \u00c9tats-Unis dus \u00e0 l&#8217;intol\u00e9rance raciale, \u00e0 l&#8217;augmentation des expressions et des actions x\u00e9nophobes dans les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s en Europe qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 touch\u00e9es et modifi\u00e9es par la migration forc\u00e9e permanente des personnes de leurs pays d&#8217;origine, les massacres perp\u00e9tr\u00e9s dans diverses nations africaines sur la base des diff\u00e9rences de religion, pour n&#8217;en nommer que quelques-uns. Donc, quand on parle de diversit\u00e9 et d&#8217;inclusion, il semble \u00eatre un exercice acad\u00e9mique plut\u00f4t que de v\u00e9ritables efforts pour cr\u00e9er des communaut\u00e9s d&#8217;inclusion parmi la diversit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Dans ce contexte, le num\u00e9ro 84 de la Revue \u00c9ducation des adultes et d\u00e9veloppement, qui refl\u00e8te la diversit\u00e9 compte tenu de la diffusion de ses auteurs (juridiction, religion, orientation sexuelle entre autres) et d\u00e9montre les efforts en vue de l&#8217;inclusion, est non seulement opportun mais extr\u00eamement pertinent, tel que le d\u00e9montre son titre \u00ab\u00a0Inclusion et diversit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb. Des \u00e9crivains de diverses parties du monde discutent de nombreux aspects de l&#8217;inclusion et de la diversit\u00e9 dans diff\u00e9rents contextes de la vie et du travail.<\/p>\n<p>La s\u00e9lection d&#8217;articles de la revue pour approfondir la r\u00e9flexion et le discours \u00e0 travers ce s\u00e9minaire virtuel fait lui-m\u00eame preuve de diversit\u00e9 tant dans le type d&#8217;articles que dans leur repr\u00e9sentation r\u00e9gionale. Daniel Mpolomoka souligne l&#8217;importance de l&#8217;inclusion dans le processus d&#8217;autonomisation de la communaut\u00e9 Daniel questionne et conteste l&#8217;approche des pratiques du \u00ab\u00a0th\u00e9\u00e2tre pour le d\u00e9veloppement\u00a0\u00bb du th\u00e9\u00e2tre zambien, soutenant que les efforts pour donner aux gens les connaissances, les outils et les comp\u00e9tences n\u00e9cessaires pour am\u00e9liorer leurs moyens de subsistance et permettre aux personnes de se d\u00e9velopper doivent inclure la voix du peuple. Mon article fait la promotion de l&#8217;inclusion comme principe de l&#8217;\u00e9ducation des adultes et, en tant que tel, examine un certain nombre de strat\u00e9gies pour aider les \u00e9ducateurs et \u00e9ducatrices d&#8217;adultes \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir de mani\u00e8re critique sur leur propre pratique d&#8217;enseignement et \u00e0 renforcer leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des classes inclusives.<\/p>\n<p>En tant que professionnels et \u00e9ducateurs\/\u00e9ducatrices d&#8217;adultes, nous devons continuellement lutter contre les facteurs qui font que les gens \u00e0 travers le monde se sentent exclus et qui emp\u00eachent les individus d&#8217;atteindre leur plein potentiel.\u00a0 En pensant \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9ducation \u00e0 travers la perspective de l&#8217;inclusion, je me souviens de la derni\u00e8re publication de l&#8217;UNESCO Repenser l&#8217;\u00e9ducation : Vers un bien commun mondial ? Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce document, nous sommes appel\u00e9s en tant qu&#8217;\u00e9ducateurs\/\u00e9ducatrices d&#8217;adultes \u00e0 \u00e9duquer de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 d\u00e9montrer et \u00e0 promouvoir dans nos soci\u00e9t\u00e9s des comportements fond\u00e9s sur les principes du respect de la vie et de la dignit\u00e9 humaine, de l&#8217;\u00e9galit\u00e9 des droits et de la justice sociale dans des contextes de vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 en raison des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s et de l&#8217;intol\u00e9rance croissantes. En effet, notre objectif en tant qu&#8217;\u00e9ducateurs et \u00e9ducatrices d&#8217;adultes devrait \u00eatre, entre autres, de permettre et de faciliter aux apprenants leur qu\u00eate &#8220;d&#8217;\u00eatre&#8221; et d&#8217;engendrer un esprit social de vivre ensemble en harmonie, en respectant notre diversit\u00e9. C&#8217;est ce sur quoi porte l&#8217;inclusion. Je vous invite donc, au cours de ce s\u00e9minaire virtuel, \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir longuement aux probl\u00e8mes qui font reculer l&#8217;inclusion dans nos contextes et \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re dont nous pouvons lutter contre ces probl\u00e8mes.
